KTM RC 490 Spotted Testing: What to Expect from the Upcoming Supersport

KTM is preparing to expand its global lineup, and the much-talked-about KTM RC 490 has finally been spotted testing overseas. Spy shots suggest that the motorcycle is well into development, giving fans a first glimpse of what could become one of the most exciting mid-segment sportbikes.

Design Inspired by the RC 390, but Sharper

The KTM RC 490 seems to borrow much of its styling from the RC 390. It features a familiar LED headlamp, daytime running lights, and projector setup. However, subtle tweaks make the 490 look sharper and more aggressive, giving it a distinct identity while still keeping the RC family DNA intact.

Twin-Cylinder Engine Confirmed

One of the biggest highlights from the spy shots is the twin header pipes, which confirm the presence of a twin-cylinder engine. Reports suggest a 490cc parallel-twin motor that could produce around 50–55 horsepower. This setup should not only deliver stronger performance than the RC 390 but also improve refinement and smoothness.

Premium Features Expected

While the full list of features is yet to be confirmed, the RC 490 is likely to come loaded with technology. Industry speculation points toward:

  • TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation
  • Multiple riding modes
  • Cornering traction control and ABS
  • Bi-directional quickshifter

If these features make it to production, the RC 490 could set a new benchmark in the segment.

Shared DNA with CFMoto

Interestingly, the test mule was spotted with a single-sided swingarm, a design cue reminiscent of the CFMoto 450 SR. This isn’t surprising, since KTM and CFMoto share a close partnership in several markets, including China. Such collaboration could help KTM offer competitive pricing and robust performance in this new model.

Why the RC 490 Matters

The KTM RC 390 has long been a favorite among entry-level supersport riders. However, many enthusiasts have been waiting for something that bridges the gap between the RC 390 and larger models like the RC 790. The RC 490 could be that sweet spot—offering more power, better stability, and advanced features while remaining accessible for everyday riders.
